How the calculator works

The tip is calculated as a percentage of the bill amount, then added to give the total, which is finally split evenly across the number of people you enter. All three figures update instantly as you change any field.

Tipping norms vary widely by country

How much, or whether at all, people tip differs a lot between countries and cultures. In some places tipping is a significant part of staff income and 15 to 20 percent is standard, in others a service charge is already included in the price and extra tipping is uncommon. The calculator doesn't take a position on what's right where you are, it just works out the numbers for whatever percentage you choose.

Common tip levels as a reference

A rough reference for what different percentages tend to represent, in places where tipping is common:

LevelApproximate percentage
Minimal / questionable service10%
Standard15%
Good service18-20%
Excellent service20-25%

Splitting the bill

The number of people field splits the total, including tip, evenly across everyone. That's a simple even split, not a breakdown of what each person actually ordered, worth keeping in mind if the group ordered very different amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bill amount I enter including or excluding tax?

The calculator just works with the total bill amount you enter, whether or not tax is already included. Enter whatever total you actually see on the bill.

Is the tip split evenly even if we ordered different amounts?

Yes, the split is always even across the number of people. If you want to split by what each person ordered, work out the shares separately before entering the total.

What's a reasonable tip if I'm not sure?

15 percent is a common starting point in many contexts, see the reference table above, but tipping norms vary a lot by country, so it's worth checking what's customary where you are.
