Body Fat Percentage and Lean Mass Chart

The tables below use the same reference ranges the calculator uses, split by sex since a "normal" body fat percentage differs between men and women. Lean mass is calculated as (100 − body fat percentage) × body weight, giving a rough picture of how much of that weight is muscle, bone and organs rather than fat.

Women

CategoryBody fatWhat it means
Essential fat10–14%The lowest level of fat the body needs for basic functions like hormone production. Staying here for long, especially without supervision, isn’t a healthy goal in itself.
Athletic14–21%Common among competitive athletes and people with highly structured training and diet. Uncommon in the general population.
Fit21–25%Common among people who train regularly without competing. Visible muscle definition is typical at this level.
Average25–32%The most common level in the general population, and not in itself considered a health problem.
Above average32%+Above the range associated with lower health risk in population studies. It says nothing about any individual’s health on its own — only where the value falls relative to the reference population.

Men

Frequently asked questions

Why do the tables differ between men and women?

Women need more essential fat than men for physiological reasons, so the entire scale shifts upward compared with the men's table. It isn't an arbitrary difference — it reflects how the bodies actually work.

Where do these numbers come from?

The band boundaries follow the American Council on Exercise classification, one of the most widely cited references for body fat percentage in fitness and health contexts.

Is lean mass the same thing as muscle mass?

Almost, but not exactly. Lean mass also includes bone, organs and body water, not just muscle, so it’s always somewhat higher than actual muscle mass alone.
